Sixth Grade Ages 11-12

Sixth grade is a fun age for both you and your child. We encourage children to be pleasant, cooperative, enthusiastic, and interested in their environments. Children of this age have a great capacity to absorb details and are eager to learn! We teach children that reading involves learning how to find good books and how to find pleasure in what they read. Our large selection of books—from familiar classics to new, up-and-coming favorites—is sure to spark curiosity in every child. The best way for children to become good readers is to read, read, READ!

Equally important is the emphasis we place on learning to write a great story. Writing stimulates expression, allowing children to communicate their wants and needs more effectively. By reviewing with each child the rules of grammar and teaching good sentence structure, they will be able to develop great strength in their personal writing skills. The best help in writing great stories is to have great stories read to them!

Many important areas of arithmetic are learned and relearned in sixth grade—adding, subtracting, dividing, multiplying, decimals, and fractions. Mental math and estimating or rounding answers are practiced. Children will learn how to apply mathematical concepts to real-life situations: discounts, expenses, commissions, and interest, balancing a checking or savings account, etc. Most importantly, as each child emerges from our sixth grade program, we are certain they will have gained the self-confidence necessary to face the opportunities of their futures.
